Mumbai bus accident: Afrin Shah lost her life on same day she began her professional journey
PTC Web Desk: In a heartbreaking turn of events, a 19-year-old girl, Afrin Shah, lost her life on the same day she began her professional journey. Afrin, who had just completed her first day at work, became one of victims of a horrific accident in Mumbai’s Kurla area last Monday evening. The tragic incident also claimed the life of 55-year-old nurse Kannis Ansari, who was en route to her night shift at a hospital.
Afrin Shah’s joy turned into unimaginable grief for her family when she failed to find a rickshaw on her way home. Following her father Abdul Salim's suggestion, she began walking towards Kurla station. Moments later, her father received a devastating call urging him to rush to the hospital. There, he found his daughter’s lifeless body, her bright future tragically cut short.
Similarly, Kannis Ansari, a veteran nurse known for her dedication, was on her way to care for patients when the uncontrolled bus ended her life in a tragic accident. Both women were among fatalities caused by a Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus that lost control on the crowded SG Barve Marg during peak hours, mowing down pedestrians and smashing vehicles in its path.
The runaway bus wreaked havoc on one of Mumbai’s busiest routes. After colliding with multiple pedestrians and vehicles, the bus came to a halt inside a residential society. The victims include Afrin Shah, Kannis Ansari, Anam Sheikh, Shivam Kashyap, Vijay Gaikwad, and Faruq Chaudhari.
The bus driver, Sanjay More, has been taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Experts are investigating the vehicle to determine whether mechanical failure, such as brake malfunction, contributed to the tragedy.
Expressing grief over the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. He also assured that the government will bear the medical expenses of those injured in the accident.
