Nine Bangladeshi nationals killed as fire engulfs Kolkata hotel; AC blast suspected

PTC News Desk: Nine Bangladeshi nationals were killed and six others were injured after a massive fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata early Wednesday, officials said.

According to the Fire Department, the victims had come to Kolkata for medical treatment.

The fire started around 2 am, and fire and emergency teams rushed to the spot. Several people reportedly lost consciousness after inhaling smoke and were rescued and taken to hospital.

Firefighters carried out a rescue operation and later brought the blaze under control. The six injured people are receiving treatment, though their condition is not yet known.

The exact cause of the fire is still unclear while authorities are investigating the incident and will inspect the hotel building to find out how the fire started.

The Kolkata hotel fire occurred just two days after another deadly hotel fire in West Bengal’s Birbhum district.

At least eight people were killed and several others were injured after a fire broke out at Hotel Bideshini in Tarapith early on August 17.

The fire started around 4:30 am on the ground floor of the five-storey hotel while most guests were asleep. The hotel is located near the holy pond beside the Tarapith temple.

Five members of the same family from Meghalaya, including two children, were among those killed. The family was staying on the top floor and tried to escape after noticing the fire, but reportedly came in contact with the flames while attempting to come downstairs.

The injured were rescued and taken to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
