Tricity heavy rain alert: Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula brace for heavy showers
PTC Web Desk: Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula are set to witness heavy rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a weather warning for the Tricity and several parts of Punjab and Haryana.
An emergency alert was issued around 5.30 pm on Monday, advising residents to remain cautious as the possibility of heavy rain increased across the region.
Heavy showers were reported in Chandigarh's northern sectors and areas around the Secretariat after 5 pm. The intense spell resulted in water accumulating on several roads within a short period. Mohali and nearby villages also witnessed heavy rain during the evening, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
According to the IMD's August 18 update, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana remain under a warning for heavy rainfall. For August 18, Chandigarh and several parts of Haryana, including Panchkula, were forecast to receive light to moderate rain, with heavy showers possible at isolated locations. Thunderstorms and lightning were also likely in some areas.
Several parts of Punjab, including Mohali, were also expected to receive rainfall.
Rain earlier in the day had already led to waterlogging at several locations across the Tricity. Panchkula witnessed intense showers that left water accumulated at multiple spots, creating difficulties for commuters and motorists. In Chandigarh, waterlogging was also reported in the Hallomajra area following the rainfall.
The sudden downpour affected vehicular movement at several locations and added to concerns over water accumulation on roads.
The weather department has forecast another spell of rain on August 19, with Punjab, Chandigarh and parts of Haryana continuing to face the possibility of heavy showers. According to the latest forecast, there is no heavy-rain warning for the region from August 20 onwards.
Residents have been advised to keep track of weather updates, particularly during the evening and night. People have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall and exercise caution on waterlogged roads.
The IMD has further advised people to stay away from open areas during thunderstorms and lightning.
Data from the Chandigarh Meteorological Centre showed that Chandigarh city recorded 24 mm of rainfall on August 17. The Chandigarh-Mohali area received 18 mm, while the Chandigarh-Panchkula area recorded 6.7 mm of rain. With another spell of rain expected, residents across the Tricity have been advised to remain alert, especially during periods of intense showers and thunderstorms.
