Punjab Bandh: SGPC backs August 21 Punjab Bandh call seeking release of Bandi Singhs, offices and institutions to remain closed
Punjab Bandh on August 21: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has extended full support to the Punjab bandh called by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha on August 21 in support of the release of Bandi Singhs. In view of the bandh, all SGPC offices and institutions will remain closed on August 21.
The SGPC has also rescheduled its earlier planned meeting of the Interim Committee. The meeting, which was scheduled for August 21, will now be held on August 22 at 11 am at the SGPC headquarters in Amritsar.
Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami said the SGPC has consistently worked for the release of Bandi Singhs and would continue to support every peaceful struggle being undertaken for the cause.
He alleged that instead of understanding public sentiment over the issue, the government was attempting to suppress the voices of those raising the demand. Advocate Dhami said every person committed to justice should oppose such an approach.
Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann has also backed the August 21 Punjab bandh call in support of the campaign for the release of Bandi Singhs.
Speaking at a press conference in Amritsar, Mann said schools, colleges, shops and railway services would remain closed during the bandh. He further stated that the shutdown would not be restricted to Punjab and would also be observed in areas with a significant Punjabi population, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
The August 21 bandh has been called in the backdrop of the continuing demand for the release of Bandi Singhs, with several Sikh organisations and leaders extending their support to the proposed shutdown.
