PM Modi unlikely to attend G7 Summit to be held in Canada, first miss in 6 years
PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Modi is unlikely to attend upcoming G7 summit scheduled to be held in Canada amid strained ties between Ottawa and New Delhi.
While South Africa, Ukraine and Australia have reportedly accepted the invitation, uncertainity over India's acceptance looms large. According to the reports, India is yet to receive formal invitation while not being inclined towards attending. The summit will be held from June 15-17. The report also mentiones that officials have maintained that the ties must improove before anu such high-profile visits are held.
Additionally, sources said there are security concerns that would need to be addressed if Prime Minister Modi were to travel to Canada in the future.
Meanwhile Canada's foreign minister Anita Anand said that the newly-elected Mark Carney government is interested in improving ties with India and building stronger partnership subsequently. She also admitted that the fallout was a result of killing of Khalistan supporter Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
The case garnered global interest after then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Narendra Modi government of being involved with the incident. India vehemently dismissed Trudeau's charges, calling them "baseless."
