PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Chennai Airport's new integrated terminal building
Chennai (Tamil Nadu), April 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the new Integrated Terminal Building (Phase-1) of Chennai International Airport.
PM Modi was in Chennai to inaugurate a number of development projects. During the occasion, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia were present at Chennai International Airport.
The state-of-the-art terminal, which spans 1,36,295 square metres, will enhance passenger serving capacity from 23 to 30 million passengers per annum (MPPA) and will be a vital addition to the city's infrastructure.
It is planned to help the local economy as well as boost connectivity.
Skylight is one of the terminal's distinctive features. This design allows natural light to be harvested and used to light the interior of the building.
"This reduces energy consumption and makes a space feel enlivening and airy," said an official.
The new terminal is a stunning reflection of the local Tamil culture, with traditional elements like the Kolam (a pattern or design drawn in front of South Indian homes), saree, temples, and other elements that highlight the natural surroundings.
The Integrated Terminal Building at Chennai Airport was built at a cost of Rs 1,260 crore, according to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The addition of this new Integrated Terminal building will expand the airport's passenger service capacity from 23 to 30 million passengers per annum (MPPA).
According to the PMO, the new terminal is a striking reflection of the local Tamil culture, with traditional characteristics such as the Kolam, Saree, Temples, and other elements that accentuate the natural surroundings.

The splendour and glory of ancient Tamil culture were on full show, and the newest modern technology will join together to welcome visitors on Saturday at the Chennai International Airport's New Integrated Terminal Building, T-2.
According to Chennai police, flying drones is prohibited in Greater Chennai Police limits from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the city.
PM Modi will flag off the Chennai-Coimbatore Vande Bharat Express later in the day at MGR Chennai Central Railway Station.
