Prime Minister Modi launches 'PM Vishwakarma' scheme for artisans, craftspeople; know key features
'PM Vishwakarma' scheme: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday rolled out the 'PM Vishwakarma' scheme for the benefit of traditional artisans in commemoration of 'Vishwakarma Jayanti'.
The Prime Minister, addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 77th Independence Day, had announced that the government will soon launch a scheme for individuals skilled in traditional craftsmanship.
Prime Minister Modi launched the Vishwakarma Scheme on his 73rd birthday. During the launch of the 'PM Vishwakarma' scheme at the India International Convention and Expo Centre in Dwarka, Modi unveiled 18 post tickets and the Toolkit Booklet.
The Union government is going to fully fund PM Vishwakarma's scheme, which will cost 13,000 crore. The scheme will help artisans and craftspeople in India's urban as well as rural areas.
- Prospective beneficiaries would be enrolled for free through common service centres using the biometric-based PM Vishwakarma portal under the scheme.
- Initially, the scheme will cover 18 traditional trades. Carpenter (Suthar); boat maker; armourer; blacksmith; hammer and tool kit maker; locksmith; goldsmith; potter (Kumhaar); sculptor, stone breaker; cobbler; mason; basket/mat/broom maker/coir weaver; doll and toy maker (traditional); barber; garland maker; washerman; tailor; and fishing net maker are among them.
- Five lakh families will be covered in the first year, with a total of 30 lakh families covered over five years from FY24 to FY28.
- The scheme's primary goal is to improve the quality and reach of artisans' and craftspeople's products and services, as well as to ensure their integration into domestic and global value chains.
- Beneficiaries of the scheme will receive recognition in the form of a PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card, as well as skill enhancement through basic and advanced training.
- Beneficiaries of the PM Vishwakarma Scheme will receive a 15,000 toolkit incentive, collateral-free credit support up to 1 lakh (first tranche) and 2 lakh (second tranche) at a 5% concessional interest rate, an incentive for digital transactions, and marketing assistance.
