Pune Rainfall: Schools shut as flooding wreaks havoc; 3 electrocuted
Pune Rainfall: Flooding caused by heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in Maharashtra's Pune, forcing schools to be closed. Four people died on Thursday as a result of rain-related accidents during a strong rainfall and continuous overnight rain.
Three of the four died as a result of electrocution in water in Pulachi Wadi in the Deccan Gymkhana region, while one died in a landslide caused by rain in Adarwadi village in Maval tehsil.
Water entered various residential areas in Pune, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department to issue a red alert for the city.
Two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have joined the rescue efforts at Ekta Nagar after the fire department began rescuing people by boat. Some areas have water up to waist level. The Baba Bhide bridge on the Mutha River is now inundated after the water level surged following the heavy rainfall.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said he spoke with officers to put the Indian Air Force and Army on alert for flood relief operations in Pune and other areas. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is currently camping at Mantralaya and coordinating with authorities, he added.
The IMD forecast that Pune will receive exceptionally heavy rainfall in isolated ghat locations and moderate showers in the plains until Friday. IMD stated that the Pune district received 567.2 mm of rain from June 1 and July 24, 2024.
