Rajasthan powerlifter Yashthika Acharya dies during gym training after 270-kg barbell falls on her neck
PTC Web Desk: Bikaner witnessed a tragic incident when 17-year-old powerlifter Yashthika Acharya lost her life during a training session at a gym. The national-level athlete suffered a fatal injury after a 270-kg barbell fell on her neck, leading to instant unconsciousness. Despite immediate first-aid efforts and CPR at the gym, she was declared dead upon arrival at PBM Hospital.
The incident occurred around 7 pm on Tuesday in Naya Shahar police station area. According to reports, Yashthika, a resident of Acharya Chowk, was practicing under the supervision of her coach when the weight slipped and fell on her neck. Fellow athletes quickly removed the weight and attempted to revive her, but she showed no response.
Yashthika was a decorated powerlifter who had recently won a gold medal in the equipped category and a silver in the classic category at the 33rd National Bench Press Championship in Goa. Her father, Aishwarya Acharya, a contractor, was away in Hanumangarh with family for a wedding, while Yashthika stayed back to maintain her training routine. Her sister is also a powerlifter currently preparing for a state tournament.
Naya Shahar police station in-charge Vikram Tiwari confirmed that no complaint has been registered by the family. However, a post-mortem examination has been conducted, and an investigation is underway. Witnesses stated that the coach counted “one, two, three” before Yashthika attempted the lift, but she lost control, causing the barbell to land on her neck. The coach also sustained minor injuries during the incident.
