Sabarmati Express derails: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the engine of the Sabarmati Express train collided with a "object placed on the track" and derailed near Kanpur at 2.35 a.m. on Saturday.
20 coaches of the Sabarmati Express passenger train derailed at Kanpur's Govindpuri station, railway authorities said. There are no reports of fatalities or injuries from the accident.
In a post on X, Vaishnaw stated that evidence from the accident has been protected, and the IB and Uttar Pradesh Police are investigating.
“The engine of Sabarmati Express (Varanasi to Amdavad) hit an object placed on the track and derailed near Kanpur at 02:35 am today," he said adding, “Sharp hit marks are observed. Evidence is protected. IB and UP police are also working on it. No injuries to passengers or staff. Train arranged for passengers for onward journey to Amdavad."
Officials stated rescue and relief operations are still ongoing at the site.
Railway Board authorities stated that the role of miscreants or anti-social elements is being investigated since it appears that the engine collided with an object placed on the track.
"We found a foreign material near the 16th coach of the train. Looking at the size of the damaged area of the engine's cattle guard, it appears that the engine collided with this foreign object and derailed," one officer stated.
"The loco pilot said that some boulder hit the cattle guard (front portion) of the engine which got badly damaged and bent," another official stated.
