Sandeshkhali case: Calcutta High Court directs CBI inquiry into Sandeshkhali physical assault case

PTC News Desk: The Calcutta High Court has taken a significant step in the Sandeshkhali case, ordering a court-monitored investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into allegations of sexual assaults and land grabs allegedly involving local leaders of the Trinamool Congress.

In response to the gravity of the situation, the court emphasised the need for an impartial inquiry into the complex matters surrounding Sandeshkhali. It mandated the CBI to submit a comprehensive report on the illegal conversion of agricultural land for pisciculture, extending the scope of investigation beyond just sexual atrocities.

This decision follows the transfer of investigations into an attack on an Enforcement Directorate team to the CBI, underscoring the heightened scrutiny on the region's affairs. To facilitate the investigation and ensure public participation, the court ordered the establishment of a portal/email ID for receiving complaints. District authorities were instructed to publicise this platform widely.

Moreover, the court laid out stringent directives for the CBI, empowering the agency to interrogate various stakeholders, including government departments and NGOs. It also mandated the installation of CCTV cameras and LED street lights in the area within 15 days, with the state government directed to provide necessary funds.

The court's proactive stance in overseeing the matter reflects its commitment to upholding justice and accountability. The next hearing on the case is scheduled for May 2.

Sandeshkhali, previously in the limelight due to an attack on Enforcement Directorate officials during a raid related to a ration distribution scam, now faces further scrutiny due to allegations of sexual assaults and land grabs implicating Trinamool Congress leaders.

One notable development in this regard is the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan, a key accused in the aforementioned charges, by the Bengal Police on February 29. His apprehension marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the Sandeshkhali case.
