SpiceJet Mumbai–Kolkata flight makes emergency landing after mid-air engine snag, all safe

PTC Web Desk:  A SpiceJet aircraft operating from Mumbai to Kolkata made an emergency landing late Sunday night after one of its engines developed a technical malfunction during descent, officials confirmed.

The flight, SG 670, touched down safely at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, and the full emergency declared earlier was withdrawn at 11.38 pm, according to the airport authorities. All passengers and crew members disembarked without injury, and no damage was reported.

Engine snag detected during descent

Officials at the Kolkata airport said the flight crew noticed a problem in one of the engines while the aircraft was preparing to land. They immediately alerted air traffic control (ATC), following which fire and rescue teams were placed on standby.

“The flight landed safely, and the emergency was withdrawn at 23.38,” an airport official confirmed. The incident prompted a brief period of heightened alert at the airport, but normal operations resumed shortly after the landing.

SpiceJet confirms technical issue

In a statement issued early Monday, SpiceJet said the aircraft experienced a technical issue during descent but clarified that the landing was smooth and uneventful.

“On November 9, SpiceJet flight SG 670 operating from Mumbai to Kolkata experienced a technical issue during descent at Kolkata airport. The aircraft landed safely and all passengers and crew deplaned normally,” a spokesperson said.

The airline added that its engineering team is inspecting the aircraft to determine the cause of the malfunction. SpiceJet did not specify the exact nature of the fault but assured that passenger safety was never compromised.

Routine checks underway

Sources said that after the safe landing, the aircraft was towed to the parking bay for a detailed inspection. Aviation authorities are expected to review the incident as part of standard safety protocol.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been informed, and the airline will submit a technical report once the inspection is complete.
