Spiritual Initiative: Now ‘Bhajans’ to be played in ICUs as treatment therapy for patients
Bhajans in ICUs: Music therapy is a therapeutic approach that uses music to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. Music can help patients express their emotions, especially when they find it difficult to communicate verbally. Patients undergoing medical procedures, like surgeries or chemotherapy, can experience a significant reduction in anxiety through music therapy.
In a novel and spiritual initiative, the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha's Cuttack to play ‘spiritual music’ or ‘bhajans’ inside all Intensive Care Units (ICUs) to aid patients with music therapy and doctors who medically treat ill patients.
Keeping in mind comfort zone for patients and emphasising that music therapy can be very effective for critically ill patients, Odisha health authorities advised hospitals to play ‘spiritual bhajans’ in intensive care units (ICUs) to provide music therapy and comfort to patients.
Recognising the potential of music therapy, this can uplift comfort, emotional support, and a sense of connection among patients, hospital officials approved music therapy plan.
Dr Abinash Rout, health specialist said that the relaxing sound of instrumental music will have an effect on healing if we can play it inside ICUs. We decided to play instrumental music in all of the hospital's ICUs after thinking on the proposal. It will be completed soon.
Music therapy can be particularly meaningful in hospice and palliative care. It can provide solace and dignity to patients as they approach the end of life. Listening to soothing music can distract patients from pain and discomfort, potentially reducing the need for pain medications.
