'Wearing masks not enough': SC raises alarm over Delhi’s ‘severe’ air pollution, urges lawyers to attend hearings virtually
PTC Web Desk: The Supreme Court on Thursday voiced deep concern over the alarming air pollution levels in Delhi, urging senior advocates to join proceedings virtually instead of appearing in person. The Bench noted that merely wearing masks was insufficient protection against the toxic air.
Calling the situation “very serious,” Justice PS Narsimha questioned the need for physical appearances when video conferencing facilities were available. “Why are you all appearing here? We have a virtual hearing system; please use it. This pollution can cause permanent damage,” he remarked in a stern tone.
The Judge further added that even masks would not be enough to safeguard against the current pollution levels and mentioned that the issue would be discussed with the Chief Justice as well.
The remarks came as Delhi woke up under a thick layer of smog on Thursday morning, with the city’s air quality remaining in the ‘severe’ category for the third consecutive day. The capital and its adjoining regions continued to reel under poor visibility and hazardous air, largely caused by stubble burning in neighbouring states.
Visuals from several parts of Delhi showed the skyline obscured by dense smog, with roads and buildings barely visible. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Bawana recorded the worst Air Quality Index (AQI) at 460 at 8 am, while NSIT Dwarka had the lowest reading at 216.
Earlier, the apex court had directed Punjab and Haryana to submit detailed reports on measures taken to control stubble burning. The counsels representing both states were given a week’s time to provide comprehensive data on steps implemented to reduce crop residue fires contributing to Delhi’s pollution crisis.
