PTC Web Desk: Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal surrendered before a court in Goa on Monday to begin serving his 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentence in connection with a 2013 sexual assault case.

Tejpal appeared before the Additional Sessions Court in Mapusa after the Supreme Court ordered him to surrender within three weeks. The apex court had passed the direction on August 25 while dealing with his challenge against the sentence.

Following his surrender, Tejpal was taken to the Central Jail in Colvale, North Goa, where he will serve his prison term.

A Supreme Court Bench headed by Justice Alok Aradhe had earlier rejected Tejpal’s request to be exempted from surrendering.

The Supreme Court has scheduled his appeal against the conviction and sentence for hearing on September 22. The matter will be taken up subject to the submission of his surrender certificate.

The case dates back to 2013 and relates to allegations of sexual assault against a former Tehelka employee. Tejpal was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Bombay High Court.
