Uttarakhand: 6 dead as brick wall collapses in Haridwar

Dehradun, December 26: In a devastating incident on Tuesday, six workers lost their lives and four others sustained injuries as a brick kiln wall collapsed in Uttarakhand's Haridwar district, according to police reports.

The tragic accident unfolded at Lahboli village, leaving a profound impact on the local community. Haridwar SSP Pramendra Dobhal, present at the scene, confirmed the unfortunate demise of six workers while revealing that four others had been hospitalised for treatment. These workers were actively engaged in their duties at the brick kiln when the catastrophic collapse occurred, the SSP reported.

"We are investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. Anyone found responsible will face appropriate action," added Dobhal.

The incident resulted in a devastating toll, claiming the lives of six individuals and leaving two others injured after being trapped under the debris of the collapsed wall in Lahboli village, Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

Upon receiving distressing news of the incident, law enforcement and administrative officials swiftly arrived at the location to conduct rescue operations. All bodies were recovered, and the injured individuals were promptly transported to a nearby private hospital for urgent medical attention.

The deceased were identified as Haridwar residents Mukul (26), Ankit Kumar (40), and Baburam (50), along with Muzaffarnagar residents Sabir (20), Jaggi (24), and Sameer (25).

Authorities from the Haridwar police provided insight into the situation. "The workers were trapped under the debris following the collapse of a wall at the Sanvi brick kiln in the Lahboli village, Manglaur police station area. Efforts using JCB machines led to the rescue of those buried. Tragically, five lost their lives instantly, while three injured workers were rushed to Roorkee hospital. Regrettably, another worker succumbed to injuries during treatment," stated the Haridwar police.

Pradeep Bisht, Station House Officer of Manglaur, shed light on the circumstances, indicating that workers were situated near a bonfire close to the weakened wall. Subsequently, an FIR was filed against the kiln owner, Rishu Malik, under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, following a formal complaint lodged by a family member of the deceased.

"It's evident that the wall was already compromised, and the proximity of the bonfire likely aggravated its structural integrity. Our investigation will determine the subsequent steps in this case," Bisht concluded.
