Video of rat biting two newborns in Indore hospital goes viral; probe ordered | Watch
PTC Web Desk: In a shocking incident, two newborn babies were bitten by rats at Maharaja Yashwantrao Chikitsalaya (MYH) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, within the past 48 hours. The hospital, one of the largest government-run facilities in the state, has come under scrutiny, with officials ordering an inquiry into the matter.
Confirming the development, hospital superintendent Dr Ashok Yadav said one infant was bitten on the fingers in the intensive care unit (ICU), while another sustained injuries on the head and shoulder. Both newborns were suffering from congenital deformities, he added. One of them had earlier been abandoned in Khargone district and was later shifted to MYH for treatment.

A committee has been set up to investigate the incidents. Meanwhile, hospital staff have been instructed to maintain round-the-clock vigilance. Authorities have begun installing iron nets on windows to prevent rodent entry, and attendants have been asked to avoid bringing outside food into the wards, as food waste is suspected to be attracting rats.
The incident sparked outrage after a video surfaced showing a rat roaming freely inside the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The video, shared by Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, showed the rodent crawling on beds and wires around vulnerable infants.
Singhar lashed out at the BJP-led state government, calling the episode “genocide” and accusing authorities of criminal negligence. “Hospitals are meant to save lives, but this has turned into a place of death. Rats are sucking the blood of newborns while the government failed to conduct pest control for years,” he alleged.
