West Bengal refuses to hand over Sheikh Shahjahan to CBI
PTC News Desk: Despite a Calcutta High Court order Tuesday, the Bengal government has refused to hand over custody of Sheikh Shahjahan to the CBI. Shahjahan IS a former Trinamool strongman accused of extortion, land grab, and sexual assault in Bengal's Sandeshkhali.
The court had ordered the police to transfer Shahjahan's custody and case materials by 4.30 p.m. At 7.30 p.m., a CBI team left Kolkata's police headquarters empty handed. The reason is that the state has approached the Supreme Court and has refused to release Shahjahan until the top court rules.
Earlier in the day, the High Court ruled that state police were "totally biased," ordering a "fair, honest, and complete investigation" into the allegations against Shahjahan." "There can be no better case than this... which requires to be transferred (and) to be investigated by the CBI," the Court said.
The Bengal government approached the Supreme Court, but their request for an immediate hearing was denied. The Supreme Court directed the state to present its plea to the Registrar-General.
A High Court bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam overturned an earlier order establishing a special investigative team consisting of CBI and state police officials, and transferred the case to the central agency.
