The award was announced on the sidelines of 73rd UN General Assembly in New York.  The award was presented by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at a ceremony in Delhi on Wednesday.

He dedicated this award to Indian Value System where trees, environment and earth were treated like Gods. Women worship trees as Gods. Reuse and Recycle have also been a major part of them.

India has taken several radical steps when it comes to responsibility towards the environment. One of which is a pledge to get rid of single-use plastics by 2022. Also read:  PM Modi awarded with UN’s ‘Champions of the Earth’
