Congress MP Preneet Kaur, suspended for anti-party activities, joins BJP

PTC News Desk: Preneet Kaur, a Patiala MP who was suspended by the Congress in February 2023 for alleged 'anti-party' activities, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday.

She joined the saffron party in the presence of several senior leaders, including Sunil Jakhar, Punjab unit chief and former Congressman.

Speaking to the media afterwards, she stated that she will continue to work for her constituency, state, and country, now led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I do not want to revisit the past...I had a good run with the Congress Party. And I hope to have a better run with the BJP," Kaur said.

When asked about contesting the general elections, the parliamentarian stated that this would be decided by the party.

Kaur's husband is BJP leader Captain Amarinder Singh, who served as Punjab chief minister twice for the Congress, the most recent from March 2017 to September 2021. After being ousted as chief minister, Singh formed his own Punjab Lok Congress (PLC) in November of that year, which merged with the BJP in September 2022.

Jai Inder Kaur, the couple's daughter, also joined the BJP. There has been speculation that Jai Inder could contest from Patiala.

Furthermore, Preneet Kaur caused a stir in December last year when she voted to expel Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra from the Lok Sabha on cash-for-query charges. The Patiala MP was the only opposition member on the ethics committee to vote for Moitra's expulsion, which resulted in her loss of House membership.
