Ex-President Kovind-led committee holds meeting on 'One Nation, One Election'
'One Nation, One Election': The Government-appointed High-Level Committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, met for the second time on Wednesday to examine the issue of holding simultaneous elections in the country and make recommendations.
After welcoming members of the HLC to the second meeting, the committee's chairman Ram Nath Kovind and members confirmed the minutes of the first meeting, held on September 23, and the action taken on the decisions made, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Law and Justice.
Niten Chandra, the Committee's Secretary, briefed the Committee members on the actions taken in response to the resolutions passed at the first meeting.
The Committee was informed that the HLC had been renamed 'High-Level Committee on One Nation, One Election' in accordance with an earlier decision.
Furthermore, the Committee was informed that letters have been sent to 6 (six) national parties, 33 (thirty-three) state parties, and 7 (seven) registered unrecognised parties, inviting their suggestions on the One Nation One Election.
Website for 'One Nation One Election' launched
The Secretary also informed the Committee that a website for the One Nation One Election has been created, which, in addition to being a repository of all relevant information on the subject, will serve as a platform for interaction and receiving suggestions from all stakeholders. Website was launched during the meeting.
During the meeting, the Law Commission of India made a presentation outlining their suggestions and points of view on the issue of simultaneous elections in the country. Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Prof. (Dr.) Anand Paliwal and Member Secretary Khetrabasi Biswal represented the law commission.
Key decisions taken in the meeting
The meeting's key decisions included the approval of budgetary provisions for the current fiscal year 2023-24. Resignation of Adhir Ranjan Choudhury, Leader of the single largest party in the Lok Sabha from the Committee was noted as well.
Amit Shah, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Leader of Opposition, Rajya Sabha, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of Law and Justice, N. K. Singh, former Chairman, 15th Finance Commission, Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap, former Secretary General, Lok Sabha, Harish Salve, Senior Advocate and Sanjay Kothari, former Chief Vigilance Commissioner attended the meeting.
