High drama in Lok Sabha: Opposition tears Bills over arrested ministers, throws it near Amit Shah

PTC Web Desk: The Lok Sabha witnessed uproar on Wednesday as the government introduced three Bills seeking constitutional amendments to disqualify a Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or any minister who spends 30 consecutive days in jail on criminal charges.

Opposition parties fiercely opposed the move, alleging it was designed to destabilise non-BJP governments and hand excessive power to central agencies. They accused the Centre of attempting to remove elected leaders through arbitrary arrests facilitated by “biased” investigative bodies.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi launched a sharp attack on the proposal, likening it to the Gestapo of Nazi Germany. He cautioned that the amendments would “turn the country into a police state” and allow unelected agencies to erode democracy.

The introduction of the Bills by Union Home Minister Amit Shah triggered chaotic scenes in the House. Several Opposition MPs tore papers and hurled them, along with chits, toward Amit Shah’s bench in protest.

The government has referred the Bills to the Parliamentary Standing Committee for further scrutiny.

Congress MP Manish Tewari also rejected the move, warning that the legislation would undermine constitutional safeguards and open the door to political misuse. “This Bill is squarely destructive of the basic structure of the Constitution. It throws all existing safeguards to the winds,” he said.
