With a significant proportion of Dalit population in Jalandhar, political leaders are banking on their votes for the upcoming bypoll. The Chaudhary family, in particular, is hoping to gain the support of Dalits due to their connection with Dera Sachkhand Ballan, a prominent Ravidassia community with influence in the Doaba region.
The Aam Aadmi Party's candidate Rinku also belongs to the Ravidassia sect. The Jalandhar seat has a Dalit population of 38 per cent, including 21 per cent Ravidasias and the remaining Valmiki or Mazhbi Sikhs. The Shiromani Akali Dal's president, Sukhbir Badal, is appealing to emotions by stating that electing the joint candidate of the SAD-BSP alliance, Sukhi, in the bypoll would be the most fitting tribute to late five-time Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
At a college in Jalandhar, an all-women polling staff manned a pink booth where children were seen enjoying and getting their nails painted.
