Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Akhilesh Yadav to contest from UP's Kannauj

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav will run for the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, a senior party leader announced on Wednesday. According to the top leader, Yadav will file his nomination on Thursday at 12 p.m.

However, no official confirmation has been issued yet.

The SP had previously declared Tej Pratap Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav's nephew and son-in-law of RJD president Lalu Prasad Yadav, as its candidate for the seat, but speculation has grown that Yadav will run himself.

Voting for the Kannauj seat will take place in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha election on May 13.

Akhilesh won the Kannauj seat in 2000 and later represented the seat in 2004 and 2009. After becoming chief minister, the SP leader resigned from his seat in 2012. Following that, his wife Dimple Yadav won the byelection unopposed. Dimple won the Kannauj seat in 2014but she lost it to the BJP in 2019.

The SP and Congress have reached a seat-sharing agreement for the Lok Sabha election in Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Yadav's party is fighting for 63 seats in the state, while the Congress is contesting 17 seats.
