Opposition Front 'INDIA' plans no-confidence motion against BJP-led govt

PTC News Desk: As the government plans a major legislative push in Parliament to break the impasse in both houses over Manipur, the Opposition alliance INDIA is considering a no-confidence motion against the government in the Lok Sabha, according to sources.

On Tuesday morning, a proposal to submit the notice was debated at a meeting of the constituents of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

According to sources, after considering several options for pushing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak in Parliament about the situation in strife-torn Manipur, it was determined that this would be an effective strategy to persuade the government to open a discussion on the matter.

According to sources, the opposition's effort to corner the government over Manipur will continue in the Rajya Sabha as well.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned until 12 p.m. after Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar finally received notices under Rule 267 from 50 MPs to discuss the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. The Lok Sabha is also adjourned until 2 p.m.

According to sources, a discussion on Manipur under Rule 267 is likely today in the upper house if the Opposition does not insist on the PM making a detailed statement in both houses before the discussion begins.

During his term, Jagdeep Dhankar has not accepted any motions under Rule 267, and he stated last year that motions under the rule "have become a known mechanism of causing disruption." The opposition is demanding that MPs be permitted to speak on the matter without time constraints and that all other legislative works be postponed for the day, as allowed by House Rule 267.

Dhankar credited Trinamool MP Derek O'Brien for explaining that notices under Rule 176, which allows for a short-duration discussion on a specific issue lasting no more than two and a half hours, can be overruled if Rule 267 notices are accepted.

According to sources, the administration does not anticipate the opposition to give up on its demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak in parliament about the Manipur problem, and it would now insist on settling its legislative work.
