PTC Web Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, marking his first trip to China since 2019. Before heading to China, PM Modi will travel to Japan on August 30, where he will participate in the annual India-Japan Summit with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

His visit comes at a time of heightened global attention on groupings like BRICS and SCO, especially after US President Donald Trump criticised BRICS nations for purchasing oil from Russia and challenging the dominance of the US dollar.

Earlier in June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had attended the SCO Defence Ministers’ meeting in Qingdao, China, but refused to sign a document that, according to sources, would have weakened India's stance on terrorism and ignored the Pahalgam Terror Attack, which claimed 26 lives.

The SCO decided not to release a joint statement after India raised strong objections. According to sources, China — the current SCO chair — along with its close ally Pakistan, attempted to steer the focus away from terrorism in the SCO document. The final draft omitted any mention of the Pahalgam attack, and instead made a reference to Balochistan, seen by Indian officials as a subtle accusation against India for allegedly creating unrest in the Pakistani province.

PM Modi's visit is expected to underscore India’s firm position on terrorism and regional security, even as diplomatic complexities continue to grow within international forums like the SCO and BRICS.
