Punjab civic polls to be held through ballot papers as High Court rejects petitions
Punjab civic polls 2026: Punjab’s upcoming municipal corporation and council elections will be held through ballot papers after the Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed three petitions challenging the State Election Commission’s decision, clearing the way for polling on May 26.
The opposition parties had demanded that the elections be conducted using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and had also approached the Election Commission over the issue.
During the hearing, the Election Commission informed the court that nearly 6,000 EVMs sent from Rajasthan had reached Ambala and could be made ready within a couple of days. However, the State Election Commission argued that, as per the Election Commission of India’s manual, more time was required to prepare the machines.
A Bench led by Chief Justice Sheel Nagu observed that the election schedule had already been announced and the poll process was underway and dismissed the petitions citing delay, confirming that the elections will now be conducted using ballot papers only.
