After BJP’s Bengal sweep, suspense builds over next Chief Minister; Adhikari leads the race
PTC Web Desk: Following a decisive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the spotlight has now shifted to the BJP leadership as it prepares to name the state’s next Chief Minister. While the party has not made any official announcement yet, internal discussions are underway and several prominent names are being considered.
Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has quickly positioned himself as the frontrunner after defeating incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Bhabanipur seat. The victory is being seen as politically significant, especially given Mamata Banerjee’s long-standing dominance in the constituency.
Party insiders suggest that Adhikari’s consistent electoral success against Mamata, including his earlier win in Nandigram, has strengthened his claim for the top post. His candidature had also received visible backing from senior leadership, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah accompanying him during the nomination process.
Despite Adhikari’s strong position, the BJP leadership is reportedly keeping its options open. State unit president Samik Bhattacharya is also being seen as a serious contender. Party leaders credit him for steering the organisation during a crucial phase and strengthening its electoral base in the state.
Another name doing the rounds is party vice-president Agnimitra Paul. If the BJP opts to appoint a woman Chief Minister, Paul could emerge as a consensus choice. Her previous experience as a Member of Parliament and her growing political profile have added weight to her candidature.
Senior party leaders indicate that the final decision will be taken by the central leadership after consultations with state representatives. According to party sources, the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on May 9, suggesting that an announcement could come shortly.
