PTC Web Desk: All schools in Punjab will remain closed on January 27 in view of Republic Day functions. The announcement was made by CM Bhagwant Mann after unfurling the national flag in Hoshiarpur during the state-level celebrations of the 77th Republic Day.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also took the salute at the ceremonial parade. Addressing the gathering, CM Mann said Punjabis had made the highest sacrifices during India’s freedom struggle and bore the maximum suffering during the Partition.

Highlighting Punjab’s role in nation-building, the Chief Minister said the contribution of Punjabis to the country’s progress has always been significant and unparalleled.

Taking a strong stand on law and order, he issued a stern warning to gangsters, asking them to abandon the path of crime immediately or face serious consequences. He said those providing shelter or support to criminals would also not be spared. The Chief Minister claimed that deliberate attempts were being made to create divisions in Punjab but warned that such designs would not succeed.

Reiterating the government’s resolve against drug abuse, he said an all-out campaign against narcotics was underway. He announced a dedicated helpline number — 98991-0002 — for people to report drug-related activities. Later, he declared a holiday for all schools across Punjab on January 27.

Meanwhile, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria unfurled the Tricolour at the state-level Republic Day function held in Fazilka. Wearing a saffron turban, the Governor announced that he would undertake a foot march from February 8 to February 11 across Fazilka, Ferozepur and Tarn Taran to connect with people.

However, the celebrations witnessed controversy in Khanna, Ludhiana, where several Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders boycotted the official function. They alleged that proper seating arrangements were not made for them, including for the personal assistant of Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh, forcing them to leave the venue in protest.

In Moga, two NCC girl cadets collapsed during the parade at the grain market and were rushed to a nearby hospital. The students were identified as Navjot Kaur and Navdeep Kaur, Class IX students of Hemkunt School, Kot Ise Khan. The incident occurred while Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian was addressing the gathering and the cadets were standing in formation awaiting their turn in the parade.
