Johannesburg shooting: At least 12 persons were killed and nine others injured after a group of armed men opened fire at an informal settlement near Johannesburg in South Africa on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, the attack took place at the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, located east of Johannesburg. Authorities have launched a manhunt for more than 10 suspects involved in the deadly shooting.

The attackers arrived in a white Toyota Quantum and entered the settlement through two different access points before opening fire at several locations. The suspects later fled the scene in the same vehicle.

Officials said eight men and three women were declared dead at the scene, while another victim died after being taken to a hospital. The nine injured people are currently receiving medical treatment.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the police have started an investigation to determine what led to the shooting.

Officers who responded to the scene found several victims suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities are appealing for information that could help track down those responsible.

South Africa continues to struggle with high levels of violent crime and one of the world's highest murder rates. The country records around 60 murders every day on average. Several deadly mass shootings have been reported in recent months, raising concerns about public safety.

Investigators are also examining whether the latest attack could be linked to criminal groups involved in illegal mining activities, which have been a recurring problem in and around Johannesburg.
