China dor turns killer again in Punjab: Young woman's throat slit on Raikot road; govt fails to stop deadly kite thread

PTC Web Desk: The blood from the last China dor tragedy had barely dried when Punjab witnessed yet another brutal death. A routine evening ride turned fatal for a young woman in Ludhiana’s Raikot subdivision, exposing once again the deadly menace of banned Chinese kite thread, and raising an uncomfortable question: Is the government asleep while citizens die on the roads?

Sarbjit Kaur, a resident of Akalgarh Kalan village near Raikot, died after her throat was slit by the razor-sharp kite string while she was riding her scooty. According to eyewitnesses, Sarbjit Kaur was heading towards Mullanpur market on Raikot Road for wedding shopping when the incident occurred near a gurdwara. A piece of China dor, flying loosely in the air, suddenly wrapped around her neck, cutting deep into her throat.

She began bleeding profusely and collapsed on the road. Passersby rushed to her aid and two men immediately placed her in their vehicle to take her to the hospital in Mullanpur. However, she succumbed to her injuries on the way. Doctors declared her brought dead on arrival. Her husband, Mandeep Singh, broke down while speaking to the media. “I had dreamed of spending my entire life with her. Today, I am left alone. My child has lost his mother forever,” he said, as grief engulfed the family and the entire village plunged into mourning.

Series of deaths, no lessons learnt

This tragedy comes just days after a 15-year-old boy was killed by China dor near Samrala, highlighting a disturbing pattern of repeated fatalities across Punjab.

Earlier incidents have been reported from Barnala, where officials confirmed the first China dor-related death in the district, and another severe case near SD College flyover, where a man was grievously injured and later referred to AIIMS Bathinda due to critical condition.

Despite a complete ban on China dor, the deadly thread continues to be freely available and widely used, especially during festive seasons.

What is govt doing?

While the Punjab government has announced bans, fines, and police action on paper, ground enforcement remains weak and inconsistent. Illegal China dor is still being sold secretly, and there seems to be no sustained crackdown on suppliers, no real-time monitoring during kite-flying seasons and no strict accountability after deaths. Each tragedy is followed by routine statements, but no lasting action.

Is the govt sleeping?

With lives being lost repeatedly, state machinery appears reactive rather than proactive. The question being asked on the streets of Punjab today is simple yet damning: How many more deaths will it take before strict enforcement replaces hollow announcements?
