CM Bhagwant Mann calls Jalandhar girl’s murder ‘inhuman’, promises fast-track trial and death penalty
PTC Web Desk: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has issued his first statement on the shocking murder of a 13-year-old girl in Jalandhar’s West constituency. Speaking at an event in Patiala, the Punjab CM said the crime falls under “the category of extreme brutality” and assured that the accused will be given the death penalty at the earliest.
He called the incident inhuman. The Punjab CM said it was unimaginable that such acts could still take place in today’s time. CM Mann directed the police to prepare a strong case file against the accused, adding that the matter would be tried in a fast-track court so that the accused receives capital punishment without delay, sending a strong message that such crimes will not be tolerated.
CM Mann was scheduled to visit the victim’s family on Saturday, but the visit was postponed due to official engagements. He said the government has been monitoring the case closely since the first day. To support the bereaved family, the state has announced a government job for the victim’s mother so that she does not remain dependent on anyone. The girl’s brother has been transferred to Jalandhar to stay with and care for their mother during this difficult time.
The Chief Minister also ordered strict action not only against the main accused but also against anyone who assisted him in any way.
The crime took place on November 22, when the father of the victim's friend, also their neighbour, allegedly strangled the girl. Public protests erupted after the incident, prompting swift action by the police. ASI Mangat Ram, accused in the case, was first suspended and later dismissed from service. Two PCR staff members on duty at the time have also been suspended. The police have obtained a nine-day remand of the accused from the court for further investigation.
