Detained farmers announce hunger strike in police custody

Gurdeep Singh, spokesperson of SKM (Non-Political), said the detained farmer leaders have started a hunger strike in police custody.

PTC News Desk: In a major crackdown on protesting farmers, the Punjab government detained several farmer leaders including Sarwan Singh Pandher and jagjit Singh Dallewal and Manjit Rai. The cops used mild force to detain farmers as they were marching towards Shambhu, Khanauri borders after their talks with Centre.

The cops started evicting farmers from the protest sites and dismantling the tents setup there. About 3,000 personnel, led by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Patiala Range) Mandeep Singh Sidhu, were at the Khanauri border point to evict protesters. He further said that they had received orders from the state government to evict the protestors.

Owing to the influx of the protesting farmers, Haryana police was also called in to swing into the action. Security was heightened at Haryana - Punjab Shambhu Border as Haryana Police remove concrete barricades erected at the border to restrict farmers' movement further from where they were sitting on a protest over various demands.

There are also reports of the suspension of Internet services at several places.

State Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema justified the actions while stating that industries and business were severely hit due to the closure of highways leading to a massive state loss. While the crackdown has drawn severe criticism from Samyukt Kisan Morcha and across the party line, industrialists have hailed the Punjab government's action.
