Dubai returnee killed in road accident while on way back home from Amritsar airport; friends injured

PTC Web Des: A young man returning home after landing in India from Dubai was killed on the spot in a late-night road accident on the Lohian–Malsian road in Jalandhar district on Tuesday, while two of his friends sustained injuries, one of them critically.

The deceased has been identified as Deepak Sharma, son of Jagjit Rai, a resident of Kotla Suraj Mal village in Shahkot. He had arrived in India earlier in the day and was travelling home in a car when the accident occurred near Nihaluwal village, close to a government senior secondary school.

According to the police, the car first collided with an oncoming Swift vehicle, following which it rammed into a truck and then went out of control before crashing into a tree. The impact was so severe that Deepak Sharma died at the scene.

One of the injured occupants, Vansh Arora, suffered serious injuries and has been referred to a higher medical facility in Jalandhar for treatment. The other friend, Sahil Arora, sustained minor injuries.

Family members said after landing at the Amritsar airport, Deepak had initially planned to travel home by bus. However, after informing his friends in Shahkot about his return, they went to pick him up in an i-20 car.

Deepak Sharma was working as a driver in Dubai and reportedly took over the steering wheel after returning to India. Preliminary information suggests that the vehicle was being driven at a high speed at the time of the accident.

Local residents attempted to rescue the occupants trapped inside the damaged car, but Deepak had already succumbed to his injuries by then. The police shifted the body to the Nakodar government hospital mortuary.

Station House Officer (SHO) Harvinder Singh of Lohian police station said a case has been registered in connection with the accident and further investigation is underway.
