Karwa Chauth turns tragic: Woman dies of heart attack while dancing in Punjab's Barnala, last dance caught on camera
PTC News Desk: In a tragic turn of events, a woman observing a fast for her husband's long life died of a heart attack during Karwa Chauth celebrations in Barnala, Punjab. Asha Rani, 59, was dancing with her friends when she suddenly collapsed. She was immediately taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.
According to neighbours, Asha Rani was fasting for Karwa Chauth — a festival where married Hindu women abstain from food and water until they see the moon, praying for their husband’s long life. Traditionally, the husband offers the first sip of water to end the fast.
On Friday evening, Asha Rani, her husband Tarsem Lal, and their granddaughter had gone to a friend’s house to take part in the festivities. While waiting for the moon to rise, the fasting women began dancing to Punjabi songs.
In a tragic coincidence, the song playing had lyrics that said, “Enjoy yourself, we don’t know what may happen tomorrow morning.” Dressed in a yellow saree, Asha Rani was seen dancing joyfully under bright lights before collapsing suddenly, leaving everyone around her in shock.
The incident has left the Barnala community deeply shaken.
Neighbours described Asha Rani’s family as active in social service. “It’s heartbreaking that she passed away on Karwa Chauth itself. The family’s pain is unimaginable,” said Hardeep Singh, a neighbour. Another local, Rinka Kumar, added, “She was dancing happily just moments before. It’s devastating — she was fasting for her husband’s long life, and this happened instead.”
