KMSC farmers move their agitation to toll plazas, entry to Govt offices blocked

Chandigarh, December 15: Farmers under the banner of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee on Thursday intensified their protest against the Punjab and central government for ‘ignoring demands’. KMSC has been demonstrating protest outside all the DC offices of Punjab for the last 19 days but they allege that authorities have not paid any heed to them. According to the strategy decided by the farmers, they will protest at 18 toll plazas across 11 districts of the state.

During their protest, farmers will not allow the fee to be deducted for any vehicle passing through the toll plazas. Senior members of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee  told that today toll booths will be closed only for two hours. The program of keeping the toll plaza closed for two hours will continue for a month, but if the government does not pay heed to their demands, then after discussion in the meeting of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, a firm front will be set up on the toll plaza on the lines of the previous movement.

Giving information about keeping toll plaza closed, KMSC general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher said that Sarakar is now backtracking on the promises made by them. Citing a discussion held with Agriculture Minister in the month of September, he said that compensation has been given to the families of 634 martyrs. While the matter of giving compensation to the rest and giving jobs to their family members is still under consideration.

Pandher said that the government had promised him that farmers would be compensated at the rate of Rs 17,000 per acre in case of crop loss, but now the government is backing away from that too. The government has made criteria ranging from Rs 5400 per acre to Rs 12 thousand per acre for compensation of crop loss.
