Panjab University senate election: Vice-Chancellor approves poll schedule days after massive protest
PTC News Desk: The central government has agreed to an key demand of the protesting students at Panjab University. Vice President and PU Chancellor CP Radhakrishnan has approved the schedule for the Senate elections. The decision was taken on November 9 and officially shared with PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig on Thursday evening.
This approval comes after several weeks of student demonstrations and strong political reactions across Punjab and Chandigarh. Earlier, the Centre had announced a controversial restructuring plan for the university, but withdrew it within a week due to heavy criticism, issuing four notifications between October 30 and November 7.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Vig went to the protest location and urged the students to call off their agitation, saying that their main demands have now been fulfilled. The PU Bachao Morcha appreciated the announcement, but said they have not yet officially decided to end the protest.
