PM Modi reviews Punjab floods, announces Rs 1,600 crore relief package and aid for affected families
PTC Web Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday undertook an aerial survey of flood-hit areas in Punjab and held a review meeting in Gurdaspur with senior officials and elected representatives to assess the scale of damage caused by heavy rains and cloudbursts.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister announced Rs 1,600 crore in additional financial assistance for Punjab, besides the Rs 12,000 crore already allocated to the state. The Centre will also release the advance installment of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and extend benefits of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) to support farmers.

Key Announcements by PM Modi:
Ex-gratia Relief: Rs 2 lakh for families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
PM CARES for Children: Comprehensive support for children orphaned due to floods and landslides.
Housing: Financial assistance for reconstruction of damaged houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin through a special project submitted by the Punjab Government.
Agriculture Support: Special help for farmers, including reconstruction of silted or damaged borewells under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana; solar panels for diesel-run pumps in collaboration with the MNRE; promotion of micro-irrigation under the ‘Per Drop More Crop’ scheme.
Education: Flood-damaged government schools to receive funding under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.
Water Conservation: Repair and construction of recharge structures for rainwater harvesting under the Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari programme, to ensure long-term water sustainability.
Livestock Aid: Distribution of mini kits and support under PMNRF for animal husbandry.
The Prime Minister expressed his condolences to families who lost loved ones in the floods, met with affected families, and assured that the Union Government will stand with Punjab in rebuilding efforts.
He also praised the NDRF, SDRF, Army, and Aapda Mitra volunteers for their swift response and dedication during relief operations. Inter-Ministerial Central teams have been deployed to further assess the damage, and additional support will be considered based on their report.
