Punjab crackdowns on illegal immigration, cancels licenses of 40 travel agents amid US deportation row

PTC News Desk: Amid US deportation row, Punjab has cancelled licenses of around 40 travel agents for charging exorbitant fees from people and facilitating their entry into the United States through illegal 'dunkey rout'. The travel agents were allegedly involved with Indian citizens who recently got deported from the US.

The crackdown on fake travel agents was carried out on the directions of Amritsar Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni. The action followed deportation of more than 300 Indians from the United States and Panama earlier this month.

The Amritsar Police has also issued notice to 271 travel agents in the city who have failed to renew their licenses.

According to the reports, police officials are constantly conducting raids to catch travel agents who are involved in facilitation of illegal travel into the US.

As US military planes landed with the deportees - 131 out of 345 are from Punjab earlier this month - the state government formed an Special Investigation Team (SIT) to crack down on fraudulent travel agents operating in the state. The SIT, headed by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Praveen Sinha, has been working overtime to track down such agents.
