Punjab: HC bans mining done under ‘desilting’ cover
Chandigarh, November 10: In a major crackdown on illegal mining, Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday imposed ban on mining being done in Punjab in the name of desilting. It is alleged that the Punjab government itself was extracting minerals by mining and further selling that too without taking the approval of the Environment Department.

The petitioner alleged that the government is doing illegal mining and heavy machinery is being used in the rivers in the name of desilting despite the High Court's ban.
The Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court said that the government should not do any kind of mining without environment clearance, on which the Advocate General, appearing on behalf of the Punjab government, assured the court that the government would not do mining without the required permissions.
