Punjab: HC rejects bail of dismissed PPS officer Raj Jit Hundal in disproportionate assets case

PTC Web Desk: Dismissed Punjab Police Service (PPS) officer Raj Jit Singh Hundal faced a significant legal setback on Friday as the Punjab and Haryana High Court denied his bail plea in a disproportionate assets case.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court's ruling came after a thorough review of the case, highlighting troubling irregularities in Raj Jit Hundal's financial affairs. The court pointed out that his name had surfaced in an investigation report submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which probed a massive drug racket estimated to be worth thousands of crores in the state of Punjab.

Notably, several of Hundal's bank accounts showed glaring discrepancies, where his assets were found to surpass his officially declared income.

The HC also emphasized that if the Chief Minister had directed the Home Secretary to initiate a case against Raj Jit Hundal, such an action could not be deemed inappropriate. During the period from 2016 to 2022, there was a significant increase in Raj Jit Hundal's wealth, prompting further scrutiny into the origins of these additional assets.

Given these compelling circumstances, the Punjab and Haryana High Court made the decisive move to revoke Raj Jit Hundal's bail.

Hundal now faces allegations of corruption and the possession of assets exceeding his reported income in the FIR filed on April 20 by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau.
