Punjab’s Sangrur village bans energy drinks to curb drug addiction among youth

PTC Web Desk:  In a bold move to safeguard its youth from the growing menace of substance abuse, the panchayat of Upli village in Sangrur district has imposed a complete ban on the sale and consumption of energy drinks. The unanimous resolution prohibits products such as Sting, Charge, Red Bull, Hell, and similar beverages, which are often considered a gateway to addiction.

To enforce the decision, large flex boards announcing the ban have been installed at all entry points of the village in Sangrur. The panchayat, backed by residents, has appealed to all shopkeepers not to stock or sell any energy drinks. Strict action in the form of social boycott has been announced against violators.

Local shopkeepers have extended full support to the initiative, assuring compliance in the best interests of children. Upli’s sarpanch said energy drinks, especially those with red and blue packaging, contained high levels of caffeine, which might trigger addictive tendencies among youngsters and eventually push them towards more harmful substances.

Alongside the ban on energy drinks, the panchayat has also issued a set of nine strict directives aimed at maintaining discipline and protecting the community from drugs. These include:

No shopkeeper is allowed to sell energy drinks; violators will face social boycott.

If anyone is caught consuming or selling drugs, neither the panchayat nor any villager will provide bail or legal support.

For migrants living in the village, landlords must ensure mandatory police verification and submit a copy to the panchayat.

The sarpanch emphasised that these rules are designed not only to prevent substance abuse but also to create a healthier, safer, and more disciplined environment for the younger generation.
