Senate poll deadlock: PU students announce gherao of BJP offices across Punjab, Chandigarh on Dec 3
PTC Web Desk: Panjab University remained closed on Wednesday as members of the Panjab University Chandigarh Bachao Morcha intensified their protest demanding the immediate announcement of Senate election dates. The morcha, supported by various student groups, had given a call for a complete shutdown of the university on November 26.
The protest, now in its 24th day, escalated last evening when the administration announced holiday today but shifted exam centres from the PU campus to DAV College. The move triggered strong resentment among students, leading to a massive uproar on Tuesday night. Later, the administration cancelled the exams too. In view of rising tensions, additional ITBP personnel were deployed on the campus today.
Addressing the media in the evening, SOI national president Ranbir Rana and other representatives of the Morcha said the fight was not only for student rights but also for the identity of Punjab. “We have been on protest for 25 days. Our rights have repeatedly been questioned, sometimes on the basis of region, language or religion. We thank everyone supporting us at the protest site,” they said.
The leaders also stated that it had been 16 days since they submitted their letter demanding the election schedule, but no response had come yet. They urged BJP leaders, including Ravneet Bittu, to intervene and ensure the Centre announces the election dates soon.
The morcha further announced that they would gherao BJP offices in Punjab and Chandigarh on December 3 if their demands are not met. They appealed to 'Punjab-loving citizens' and college students across the state to join the protest and gherao BJP offices in their respective districts.
