SGPC chief Advocate Dhami urges PM Modi to reopen Kartarpur corridor without delay

PTC Web Desk:  Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling for immediate reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor, which links India to Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib in Pakistan.

In his letter, Advocate Dhami described Kartarpur Sahib as the sacred ground where Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent his final years, spreading his message of honest labour, devotion and communal harmony. He noted that the gurdwara sahib holds deep emotional significance for Sikhs everywhere, many of whom have long hoped to visit it in person.

The corridor was thrown open in November 2019 to mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, allowing lakhs of devotees to cross over and pay their respects at the historic gurdwara for the first time in decades. Its recent suspension, prompted by security concerns between the two countries, has left the global Sikh community disheartened, Advocate Dhami said in his letter.

He pointed out that this is not the first time the SGPC has raised the issue. The body has passed several resolutions over the years conveying the sentiments of the Sikh Panth to the Central Government and has earlier written to both the Punjab Governor and the Union Home Minister seeking swift action on the matter.

Advocate Dhami's letter further stresses that reopening the corridor is not merely a logistical or travel matter but a question of honouring the religious sentiments of millions of devotees across the globe. He has appealed to the Prime Minister to treat the issue as a priority, given the shrine's unique connection to Guru Nanak Dev Ji and to direct the relevant ministries to take the diplomatic and administrative steps needed to restore access to the corridor without delay.

The SGPC chief expressed hope that the Central Government would respond to the Sikh community's appeal with empathy, so that devotees from around the world can once again bow before Sri Kartarpur Sahib.
