SGPC set forth nationwide signature campaign for release of Bandi Singhs

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Thursday launched a nationwide signature campaign demanding the release of the 'Bandi Singhs' from 1 December. Bandi Singhs are Sikh political prisoners that as per SGPC are still lodged in different jails despite completion of their sentences.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Harjinder Singh told that during the campaign, camps will be set up at gurdwaras, educational institutions, railway stations, bus stations, towns and important crossroads, he said.

During the campaign, there will be increased awareness among community members about the cases of Sikh prisoners and the sentences they are serving.

Dhami had earlier said that Sikh prisoners were lodged in different jails for nearly three decades despite completion of their sentences and this was a “big injustice” to the Sikh community.

The SGPC, the apex religious body of the Sikhs, has been demanding the release of Sikh prisoners through democratic means for a long time, he had said.

The signed petitions will further handed over to the president of India Droupadi Murmu for a final review over the demand.
