Woman succumbs to burns after self-immolation outside police station in Zirakpur
PTC News Desk: The 28-year-old woman who set herself ablaze outside the Baltana police station in Zirakpur succumbed to her injuries during treatment at PGI after battling for life for 12 days after suffering 80 % burns.
The victim's family alleged that she had been visiting the police station for several days seeking registration of FIR in connection with sexual assault and cheating case but was turned away each time.
She had suffered nearly 80% burn injuries. According to police officials, the woman had first approached the Chandimandir police in August 2025, accusing a salon owner named Sohib from Uttar Pradesh of cheating and sexual assault. Police later advised her to contact the Mohali police because the alleged sexual assault incidents reportedly took place at a hotel in Baltana.
After her self-immolation attempt last month, the Mohali police transferred two policemen from the Baltana police post to the police lines and started a departmental inquiry against them. Later, the Zirakpur police arrested the accused near Daria railway station.
The woman’s mother blamed the police for not taking action despite repeated complaints. She said that if the police had acted earlier, her daughter would still be alive. She also said her daughter was the only earning member of the family.
The Punjab State Women Commission also took suo motu notice of the incident over concerns about alleged police negligence and violation of women’s rights. The commission directed the Mohali SSP to conduct a quick inquiry through an SP-rank officer and submit an action taken report.
