Punjab: Advocate General Office appointments challenged in HC

Chandigarh: The appointments made in the Advocate General Office of Punjab have been challenged in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday. The petitioner alleged in the High Court that there was a large-scale scam in these appointments. The petitioner has argued that preference has been given in these appointments to those people who cannot speak, write or read Punjabi. Also Read | Karan Johar’s goodbye to Twitter sparks meme fest on social media Reportedly, some candidates did not clear the Punjabi exam in 10th standard, which is a mandate for almost all the government offices in Punjab. “The rules of mandatory Punjabi language have been blatantly violated. To get a government job in Punjab, it is mandatory to pass Punjabi in 10th standard,” claimed petitioner. It has also been said in the petition that the rules of 33 percent reservation of women in the appointments have also been neglected. It is to be noted that in the month of August, 28 additional Advocate Generals, 13 Senior Deputy Advocate Generals, 40 Deputy Advocate Generals and 65 Assistant Advocate Generals were appointed by the Punjab Government to pursue the legal affairs of the state. These appointments were announced by the Home Department of the state. Notably, the Punjab government had issued a recruitment advertisement in the month of April. According to the advertisement issued by the Department of Home and Justice, Punjab, 178 law officers were to be recruited to represent the government in the High Court, Supreme Court and Delhi, but later only a list of 146 law officers was released.
