Mohali, February 12: The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has announced to oppose the proposed rallies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Punjab on February 14, 16 and 17 ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections 2022. In a statement on Saturday, farmer organisations under the banner of the SKM said the Central Government had failed to fulfill its promise to bring a law on the MSP guarantee and was yet to form a committee on it and withdraw lawsuits filed against farmers. The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha said they were against the proposed rallies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Punjab and would hold protest on these days. However, it is learnt that the protest will not be held on February 17, when PM Modi is scheduled to addresses a rally in Abohar (Malwa). The Sanyukt Kisan Morcha said they would burn the effigies of Prime Minister Modi and the Centre for not keeping a word on their pending demands, including forming a committee on the MSP issue, withdrawal of cases against farmers and compensation to the bereaved farmer families. Punjab elections 2022: SKM to hold protests during proposed PM Modi's rallies Notably, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had recently said in the Rajya Sabha that an MSP committee would be formed after the 2022 Assembly elections in five states. He had stated that a committee to look into encouraging crop diversification, natural farming, and making MSP effective and transparent would be formed. Tomar had said the committee would be set up after the Assembly elections in the five states were over.
