Punjab Bandh August 21: What will remain open and what will stay closed? Check full list
Punjab bandh on August 21: The allied organisations of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha have called for a Punjab bandh on August 21 to protest against alleged police action against their supporters, the filing of cases and the continued detention of Sikh prisoners, commonly referred to as Bandi Singhs.
The announcement was made after a meeting of the organisations associated with the morcha. Leaders said the bandh would be observed from 7 am to 2 pm.
According to the organisers, the shutdown is aimed at drawing attention to their demands and what they described as police excesses against members of the morcha.

The organisers claimed that markets and public transport would remain closed during the bandh. They also announced that road traffic would be stopped during the protest period.
They appealed to the government to ensure that train services were also suspended. However, they warned that if trains continued to operate, protesters could block railway services. Schools and colleges are also likely to remain closed as part of the bandh call. The final call will be taken by the authorities.
At the same time, the organisers said they did not want to force the public to participate. They said the seven-hour window had been chosen after taking into account the need to minimise disruption to people.
Emergency services will remain operational during the bandh. Hospitals and medical stores will remain open. People travelling to airports, attending examinations or weddings will also be allowed to travel.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has also extended support to the bandh call.
Addressing the meeting, morcha leaders accused the Punjab government and police of using force against protesters. They alleged that cases were registered against members of the group and claimed that their human rights had been violated.
The leaders also criticised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, alleging that the state government had failed to stand with the protesters.
They further alleged that police action had taken place on Punjab soil and claimed that tear gas shells were fired during the confrontation, including near Guru Granth Sahib. They also alleged that cases were registered against some protesters over carrying kirpans.
The leaders said several organisations had come together under a joint platform and claimed that they were receiving suggestions and support from different sections.
They also alleged attempts were being made to create religious divisions in Punjab and called upon people across the state to support the Punjab bandh.
