WhatsApp introduces HD photo sharing and teases upcoming HD video feature: Here's how it operates

WhatsApp introduces HD photo: The HD photo sharing feature is being gradually released to all users on the WhatsApp platform over the coming weeks. This update enables users to share high-quality and high-resolution images in their chats, encompassing Android, iOS, WhatsApp Web, and desktop users. These images will be denoted with a small 'HD' icon. Furthermore, Meta has confirmed that the ability to send HD videos will be introduced in the near future.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, unveiled the rollout of this feature in a Facebook post on Thursday. Users will see an 'HD' icon when attaching an image to a chat thread. The feature underwent testing earlier this year in the beta version, with a focus on maintaining image clarity. However, it's important to note that HD images require more data during transmission and occupy more storage space compared to non-HD images.

The operational mechanism of WhatsApp's 'HD photos' involves the app applying light compression to HD images. By default, the app will offer the Standard non-HD option. Users interested in sharing high-quality images need to manually choose the HD option before sharing.

It remains unspecified by Meta how much compression will be applied to HD photos. There is no clarity on how these images will compare to images shared via platforms like Apple's iMessage or other competitors. Importantly, just like any other media shared on WhatsApp, HD photos will be safeguarded by end-to-end encryption. Recipients with slower internet connections will be able to download the standard version of the shared media.

Notably, WhatsApp has also introduced a screen-sharing feature during video calls, resembling the layouts of Google Meet and Zoom. During video calls, participants appear in small rectangular tiles on one side of the screen, while the shared content occupies the primary view.
